Springbank is a whisky of choice, funnily enough, very few...say never...tasted a Hazelburn. Fragrance promises a lot......
    • Nose
      84 84
Yellow fruit, not so much banana.....a little dried grass....a little oil...no motor oil.......sunflower or something. A little later, a sort of delicious gourmand.... crazy enough sweet. Funny.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very intense taste. Spicy, more than the fruit in the scent. Pepper known to me. Also bubble gum. Very tasty. Switching flavours. Now a bit sour ..... such a sour candy .... that yellow round one, from grandma in the past.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium aftertaste. Again some bubblegum and some sort of hay.....very pleasant to fall asleep with.

nice tasty Campbeltown Malt, I like it very much. Very fruity fresh.
    • Nose
slightly smoky fresh, fruity, earthy, subtly sweet, nice, pleasing nose. Seems pretty soft.
    • Taste
Citrus-fruity, earthy, slightly dirty, the sherry aging is more noticeable here. Dark berries and dried fruits, sweetish, caramel. Here come more aromas than in the nose.
    • Finish
Strong and sweet, fruity. Beautiful aromas that stay in the throat and esophagus for a long time. A bit sour at the end.

    Color: light gold
Tasted right after the Hazelburn 10yo 2007-2018 "Campbeltown festival", this whisky didn't impress me as much. I found it a bit "off", perhaps due to the 10% lower alcohol content, but I was absolutely not impressed, despite the undoubted quality. Even compared to the 13yo 2007-2020 50.3% tasted last October at the Treviso Whisky Week (exceptional), this is definitely a step below.
    • Nose
On the nose marzipan, a hint of wax, very sweet but with a hint of sulfur that does not disturb at all, on the contrary it accompanies and amalgamates everything else. Alcohol is well integrated, but you can hear it more than in the 10yo "Campbeltown festival 2007-2018" tasted a few minutes before and which has over 10 degrees higher
    • Taste
Good, but not up to the 10yo tasted just before

Nice pleasant delicious peat with a fruity sweet character. Very nice dram

  7. davidloosli scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Very quaffable, maybe a bit light on the palate
    • Nose
Very "springbanky", delicious Haribo fruits, sweet lime, gets rather lemony, a bit perfume, marzipan, nice fruit basket, peach
    • Taste
Furry feeling, rather light, sweet fruits, lychee, a bit of smoke, creamy, lime pie, a bit grassy, a hint of melon
    • Finish
More smoke comes out, cookie dough, sweet mint, a bit chocolaty, meringue

  8. dongolzo81 scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Nose relatively simple: citrus and more citrus. Sweet On the tongue, a bit too sharp for 48% abv, despite sweet hints, then a higher complexity, the expected aromas of citrus, vanilla, light fruits, salt and chalk, but not fully balanced for me. Fewer off-notes than the Oloroso Hazelburns.
And a stable finish, where the light fruits prevail again, complemented by caramel.

Hazelburn 13 yo 2007/2021 (48.6%, OB, Limited Edition, 6,000 bottles) Four stars and a half
¾ bourbon and ¼ sherry, I think we've seen that combo working many times already, everywhere. Colour: light gold. Nose: very pure, yet a tad metallic and herbal, with also some beach sand and some kelp, as well as rather unexpected whiffs of orange blossom. Tends to become really floral, with some fresh pollen and certainly a wee glass of limoncello. A wee Springbanky fatness too, rather around old tool, engine oil… Just drops mind you. Lovely fresh and complex nose. Mouth: there, the Distillery's awesome dirty side and it's not even hiding. More engine oil, linseed, touches of soot and cigarette ashes, then gentler notes, lemon marmalade, elderberry syrup, a few mashy notes… I was about to mention salsify too, and mint, and aniseed, and liquorice. Finish: medium to long, fresh, saltier, a little smoky once again, even frankly coastal towards the aftertaste. Oysters, lemons and champagne. Comments: high-definition make, just a tad less complex than the fantastic North Star. I'm a fan of this style.

    • Nose
Apple, pear, lemon, mango and orange. Then comes the Springbank farm air. It continues with wet pebbles, tangerine and coconut.
    • Taste
Peppery, orange, mandarin, honey and peach.
    • Finish
Fairly long. Pepper and orange. A little bit dry.

A fine touch of Bourbon. It is very woody, fruity, iodized, minty, cereal. White plums and vanilla, puffed wheat and hay, sea salt and seaweed. Some vegetal and telluric touches. All in a beautiful balance. Mouth bathed in wood, juniper, cloves, cumin. It is leafy, spicy, the fruits give way to a beautiful black earth. Long and sandy finish, on ginger, mint leaves, lamb's lettuce. A few cola seeds to finish.

Very nice hazelburn, very distillate driven, which is nice thing these days where a lot of distillates get killed by too much cask... creamy, vanilla, some honey and zest... Medium long finish with some oak, all very pleasant.

Maybe the worst HB I've tasted lately. Label states Speacial Edition, though it is a mystery to me what's special about it, I guess they didn't have anything else to put there. It seems to taste quite straightforward, not much barrel influence, more like what a core range taste profile should be. Lacks body, not too complex, tastes bitter-solvent. I was happy to secure two bottles, but after tenth revisit of the first one I am a bit confused. Now that it is available only at the secondary market, don't throw 3 digits at this botling.

It's pretty much in the same style as the 2007 Barolo version from 2016, it appears hardly older. Definitely not as cask-driven as the Oloroso version from 2020.

If the Springbank 12 CS is too hard and strenuous for you: here is the alternative. Although it has significantly fewer notes typical of Springbanks, enough dirt flashes through here and there so that it cannot disguise its origins.
    • Nose
Very clear and pure nose with vanilla, honey and fresh yeast plait. At the beginning you might think that the whisky lacks all the elements typical of Springbank, but over time the moist pebble comes along and a little salt comes. Everything slowed down a bit, which is most likely due to the triple fire. In any case, it is not “dirty” at all, but it does not have to be. Spring flowers, light apple, fresh apricots.
    • Taste
Tastes like spring, tastes like more - pleasant start, slightly oily. Vanilla, honey, yellow apple, spring flowers, cereals, fresh bread. The ex-bourbon casks definitely prevail here. Now here he has something that seems “dirty”: a notion of machine oil and chain grease, there is a little workshop feeling here. Marzipan, malt, some allspice.
    • Finish
Medium to long, dry. It's fun because he doesn't really want to leave the tongue. You can taste the aromas of the palate forever: mainly vanilla and yellow apple with cloves.

It is a nice, easy going dram for a maximum of 65€.
It's not close to the 13 Oloroso at all, so don't expect anything similar.
This one is not complex, it's more of a thin whisky. Everything is balanced but nothing I'm crazy about. Hazelburn you can do much better.

You can hear the bourbon barrel pretty well. Wood, walnut, spice, then fruit. Not so distinctive compared to the nose

It makes a pleasant change from all of the heavily sherried releases Springbank have been putting out there recently. I especially like that some delicate nuance can be detected in this dram, instead of being drowned out by heavy cask influence.

  55. drummer & timmer did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    TASTING NOTES by SPRINGBANK:

    Nose
Deliciously smooth and creamy like lemon cheesecake with notes of vanilla, citrus and crushed digestive biscuits.

    Palate
Fruity; ripe peach and crisp, juicy red apples. The bourbon influence promotes notes of vanilla whilst there are hints of honey and orange rind with a developing undertone of liquorice.

    Finish
Delicate, grassy freshness with subtle hints of honey and glazed dates.
